Current series
Outlander (4 seasons)
Another worldwide hit, the adapted series of Diana Gabaldon’s books is currently shooting its fifth season. Violence, history, politics, hot sex and a good dose of fantasy … A drama that will remind Game of Thrones in many ways, even if the background is more romantic. It’s hard not to be passionate about Claire ( Caitriona Balfe ), the British Second World War nurse who accidentally went back in time to find herself in the Scottish Highlands in the 18th century and meet the warrior in kilts, Jamie Fraser ( Sam Heughan ) …
To see in France on Netflix.

The Shannara Chronicles (2 seasons)
Based on Terry Brooks’ series of fantastic books , the series takes place thousands of years into the future. But visually, it feels like being in The Lord of the Rings . We discover a great saga of adventure, while goblins, trolls, dwarves and humans struggle to get along. We follow Princess Elf Amberle ( Poppy Drayton ), human singer Rover Eretria ( Ivana Baquero ) and half-elf Wil ( Austin Butler ) in their quest to prevent a demonic army from destroying the universe.

Into the Badlands (3 seasons)
This time we are in a post-apocalyptic world, 500 years after a devastating war that left civilization in ruins. Modern technologies such as electricity and cars have survived, but the company has banned guns. Everyone uses knives, sabers and crossbows. The fantasy series delivers superb martial arts battles and a battle between barons to control wealth, drugs and vital resources such as water.

The Last Kingdom (3 seasons)
Based on Bernard Cornwell’s literary saga , The Saxon Histories , the series takes place in England in the 20th century, at a time when Viking invasions were commonplace. Less fantasy but as medieval as Game of Thrones , it is centered on a character named Uhtred ( Alexander Dreymon ), a noble Saxon captured and raised by the Vikings who fight for the English. As in the HBO hit, it’s all about power struggles, complicated relationships, family drama and bloody battles. The violence is extremely graphic: decapitation, impalations, and other crucifixion will fill those who already regret this good old Ramsay Bolton.
To see in France on Netflix.

Vikings (5 seasons)
The successful series is about to end. But if you have never put your nose in the conquests of Ragnar Lothbrok ( Travis Fimmel ), now is the time. Spectacular battles, betrayals, major political clashes, tensions with his brother Rollo ( Clive Standen ), his wife Lagertha ( Katheryn Winnick ), and the wars of succession without mercy, it is the exceptional cocktail of this very beautiful series big budget, clearly more historical than fantastic, which will end with season 6 this year.

Upcoming series
At the Crossroads of Worlds (end of 2019)
The British channel BBC has produced this adaptation of the saga of Philip Pullman , At the Crossroads of Worlds ( His Dark Materials ). Adaptation that the film failed to turn into a success in 2007. With a solid gold casting, consisting of James McAvoy , Ruth Wilson , Lin-Manuel Miranda and the little Dafne Keen ( Logan ) to play Lyra, and under the direction of the excellent Tom Hooper ( The Speech of a King, Les Miserables ), there is enough to hold there the new world fantasy phenomenon. Moreover, HBO felt the blow and positioned itself as a co-producer. What’s more, the series At the Crossroads of Worlds will benefit from an ideal timing, since it is already ready.
To see in France on OCS.
